But the two countries are very different today: the Dominican Republic enjoys higher quality of life for many factors than Haiti. I went to this island and visited both countries, to try and understand when and how their paths diverged. And I began to learn how those differences are playing out in the present.Vox Borders is a new international documentary series presented by lululemon, by Emmy-nominated videojournalist Johnny Harris. For this series, Johnny is producing six 10-15 minute documentaries about different borders stories from around the world.Vox Borders Episodes:1. Most African countries that were once colonized by France are still being exploited.

The island wasn't "rich in resources like sugar and coffee" -- sugar and coffee aren't native to Hispañola. These plants were introduced, plantations were carefully planned and planted. Labor was brought in -- alas, slave labor. But all this required capital and planning and management effort.

Wait!!!! Did I just hear this right... French after colonizing Haiti and exploiting it had the audacity to ask for money from same people whom they exploited.... Why did Haiti pay back?

Its unpopular to say but a lot of the Latin Nations bordering the Caribbean can be very racist when it comes to darker skinned people. Part of that way of thinking comes from colonization.

This gave a little more respect for the French. Some badass dudes, but they play it off with their miming and baguets and beautiful language.
