Haiti and the Dominican Republic share a border, and an island. But the two countries are very different today: the Dominican Republic enjoys higher quality of life for many factors than Haiti. I went to this island and visited both countries, to try and understand when and how their paths diverged. And I began to learn how those differences are playing out in the present.

Vox Borders is a new international documentary series presented by lululemon, by Emmy-nominated videojournalist Johnny Harris. For this series, Johnny is producing six 10-15 minute documentaries about different borders stories from around the world.

    Vox Borders Episodes:

As a dominican I agree with the sentiment and message of this video. The way my country has treated the haitian people is abhorrent. But claiming that dominicans are racists against black people is the most ludricous thing I have heard, when basically noone in our country would be considered white and roughly a fith of people are as black as haitians. And I can tell you that these darker skinned dominicans aren't treated bad bc of their color. And they are just as likely to hate on haitians as lighter skinned dominicans. This isn't a color thing, but rather a xenophobic thing.

he's not listening what dominicans have to say instead of the driver.

The same is not going on in America despite some idiotic comments. If you are born in America, you are a citizen. We do not take citizenship away and deport people. We deport people because we have a system of laws like every other country in the world. Name a country who won't deport a person with absolutely no documentation. There is no country in the world that people think they can flood into and are entitled to live in except our country.

Haiti has been independent longer any country in the Western Hemisphere except the U.S. and has had ample time to fix its problems, which are not due to racism. This is an absurd video.

Jonny, there are some things that you omited in the video, like the invasion of Haiti in the Santo Domingo colony and the sub-sequend independence of the west side, known has the Dominican Republic, which lead not only to this division of the island, but for many factors that lead to what you saw:

-The Haitian government, during the island occupation, where so in debt that they extort not only the west side, even their own citizen where extorted has a way to collect enough resources to France.
    - The west colony was seriously explored by the corrupted Haitian burocracy that in 27 of February of 1844, announced their independence, and several times, Haiti tried to retake the west side many times, something that the Dominican government and his citizens take with bad attitude.
    - The main reason why the Dominicans are very racist with the Haitians is all thanks to Rafael Leónidas Trujillo during his 30 years of dictatorship, in which he launch an attack against Haitian families that were near the border, and reshape the dominican peoples pride to hate the haitians.

I know this has a nationalized citizen who lived many years and knows what is going on here. ( I’m not haitian, by the way)
Next time, make deep research to avoid inconclusions and inform well situations.
    Thank you
