  • Technology innovations are developing at a lightning pace in the healthcare space. However technology needs limitations and I've always been a firm proponent of keeping humanity as a top principle within the field, so when I heard about this story I knew I needed to respond with a video. Thanks for your suggestions via Twitter!

Always face to face...Never robots for me. A human must be directly responsible. AI is stupid.. it just tracks patterns records n recommends you a course of action based on your patterns. silly.

This is good news. Technology provides us with many conveniences. What do you want? you want quick access and convenience, this is it!
The family member demanded to talk to a "doctor" and the nurse brought in a "doctor." LOL

I can see the doctor attempting to talk to the patient at night if there was not a DNR in place and his blood gases were tanking and a decision was probably going to have to be made before morning as to whether to put the patient on a ventilator but I am also wondering why the patient was not asked at admission if he had a DNR on file or to get the family's wishes if he was bad enough to go straight to ICU. Also think the family should have gone to hospital administration rather than media so the doctor or PR dept. would have had the opportunity to explain why this was done instead of shutting out the hospital's voice by engaging the media. I used to be the transplant liaison and know the tightrope you walk between families and transplant teams and the clock, yet still dot all your i's and cross all your t's.

That is only a current view of healthcare, but "robots can never replace doctor" it's a very bold statement. It's only the current view of the majority in society.. But, as civilization advances, that's a totally different game. Yes, your statement only holds truth for the present, but not for the future.

Okay, now I ave context. I thought this was a story about preliminary testing of replacing doctors with robots. Hence the ''bad news''.

This family just wanted something to bitch about. We use video chatting all the time in our lives. Why should this be seen any differently than any other video call?

It's not like they didn't have other staff on hand to help explain what the doctor was telling the family and provide the emotional support they were wanting and needing at the time.

If there was not an appropriate doctor available at the time, would you rather have someone who is not qualified, or a qualified individual who is telecommunicating with you? I would definitely choose the latter.

Telemedicine is a great thing. It gives us access to specialists that we would otherwise not have access to, especially at night. What I often see with specialists that are in town and on call is that they'll do anything they can to let the patient wait till morning. They don't want to come in. But a telemedicine doctor is being paid to be available right now and give you answers right away and in a much closer to "in person" way.

I hate the way the media overblows stuff like this. They can really set healthcare back with their terrible reporting. I used to want to be a journalist. So glad I avoiding becoming a disgusting snake for my job.
