  • China has the world’s fastest and largest high-speed rail network — more than 19,000 miles, the vast majority of which was built in the past decade.Japan’s bullet trains can reach nearly 200 miles per hour and date to the 1960s. They have moved more than 9 billion people without a single passenger causality. casualty France began service of the high-speed TGV train in 1981 and the rest of Europe quickly followed. But the U.S. has no true high-speed trains, aside from sections of Amtrak’s Acela line in the Northeast Corridor. The Acela can reach 150 mph for only 34 miles of its 457-mile span. Its average speed between New York and Boston is about 65 mph.California’s high-speed rail system is under construction, but whether it will ever get completed as intended is uncertain.Watch the video to see why the U.S. continues to fail with high-speed trains, and some companies that are trying to fix that.» Subscribe to CNBC: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBC» Subscribe to CNBC TV: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCtelevision» Subscribe to CNBC Classic: http://cnb.cx/SubscribeCNBCclassicAbout CNBC: From 'Wall Street' to 'Main Street' to award winning original documentaries and Reality TV series, CNBC has you covered. High speed rail in Japan works like this:Walk up to the ticket office and get your ticket.Go to your platform. The train pulls in on time. You get on the train, and sit down. The train pulls out on time. No sitting on a tarmac for an hour or so, that was nice wasn't it? The ride is smooth as silk, the seats plush and roomy, and you take it for granted that you'll arrive at your stop on time, not knowing how unusual something like that is in the states. You arrive on time and get off the train. No...

@michael henderson That's their inner city subway system, not their multi-city high speed rail. And he is comparing rail to aviation within cities on the same continent. A plane will not come to your front door either.

I can tell none of you have been to outher countries. In japan its cheaper to use the train than to own a vehicle. If we start to get trains everywhere, insurance companies will have to lower prices, gas prices will lower, death from motor vehicles will drastically lesson. America needs to stop waiting for the last minute. There's also other benefits too, JOBS. You dont have to live in the city to have a job in the city, you can have it while living an hr away for driving but by train 20 minutes....

@David Reece idiot. you do know very well, that the OECD bandwith of tax rates is between 25% and 57%..i am proud co-owner of a lot of useful infrastructure in Europe. High value for small price. And i can buy with only 50% of my overall income the same amount of goods and services as you Americans can for 70% of your overall income. Plus: we have rails, health care, free universities, common natural resources...

70-80 years ago yes, but gasoline accounts for less than 10% of the oil industries production in modern times. The majority, oddly countering this video, is high-sulfur diesel fuel for trains & freight ships. The auto & oil industry did have a large part in tipping the scales in the 40-50s towards automobiles but they absolutely are not the culprit for keeping rail out of the states that issue lies in the government not being able to annex large swaths of land to build tracks.
