  • Pete Buttigieg, the mayor of South Bend, Indiana, seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, is facing criticism for how he's responded to a fatal police shooting in his city. This follows years of tension between Buttigieg and the black community there. Adam Wren, a contributing editor for Indianapolis Monthly and Politico Magazine, joined CBSN to discuss the recent fallout.

I am a Bernie fan but would rather have Mayor Pete to Biden. Mayor Pete is not racist and he has the heart of gold and he is handling the situation like it should be handled. It is nothing wrong to show emotions (like human not like creepy uncle joe) if you are a Mayor Pete’s fan don’t let this to be a negative point of him for you. This is actually a positive point for leader for him.

He didn't shoot anyone. The criticism has been unfair. That being said, Thelisa Eaddy of South Carolina Public Radio was at the candidate's fish fry the other day and said that black South Carolina voters were nearly all respectful of the fact that he went back to South Bend to deal with the issues in his city rather than to be at the fish fry and continue to campaign.

This is an unfair assessment of Mayor Pete Buttigieg. There are lots of unanswered questions that require an investigation such as: Why was the body camera off. Was it a failure or deliberately turned off? Are there documented situations showing the discriminatory behavior of the white officer? Was there a police file of the man who was shot? Has the mayor tried to hire more black officers? So many questions.I saw the emotion on the Mayor's face and heard the emotion in his voice when he was asked...

Thanks Daniel, I am not from South Bend, but I have been watching Pete for quite sometime. I am so impressed with his sincerity, I believe what he says and trust his judgment. I'm also impressed with his background story, his education and his military service. I worked for the U.S. Army as a Public Affairs Specialist for a number of years and I know that the skills learned in the service of our Nation are critical to this time. We need someone with experience dealing with other nations. We need to bui...

Beautiful, Bonnie. This is the second or third comment I have read from you on this matter; all were spot on. Funny (infuriating is the word); he is criticized for not showing emotion and criticized for showing emotion. I personally found his calm professional demeanor at that town hall impressive. That is what leadership and authenticity looks like; he could have said "I feel your pain" at the top of his lungs, like Bill Clinton did, but that would not have been REAL. And he is real, and pa...

So far all the comments I've seen on this aren't even connected to the issue! Must be Russian bots!

Not Russian bots. It takes time for an investigation to determine what happened. It's hard to wait. Emotions are in control now. People a grieving and some are angry. They want it fixed now. If this was possible any leader would make it happen..Everyone needs to know the truth. Leaders know this and, like Mayor Pete, they work to contain the anger so that the truth can be found. Pete seems to deeply care about South Bend. He dropped everything because South Bend is important to him.

This is cruel! Everyone including CNN, FOX, Woopi Goldberg - all attacking Pete Buttigieg! For what? He wasn't asking for vote - he was trying to fix a problem as Mayor of Indiana. How would you do in that situation? More strength to you, Mayor Pete. This empty noise doesn't represent all of us.

Do any of these people who comment here think they could do better in addressing this problem? Or, could anyone solve this problem considering all the similar things that happen all the time? Who has the answer?

For one, I wouldn’t fire the black police chief because he pointed out the racism problem in the police department. That would have been a good start 🙄

I am sry.. what is the problem in this case? - A black guy is shot and.. ?? somehow this is Butitgieg fault? Is it somehow a test of how he would perform as president? It is clear that he dont think racial profiling is ok, and it should be obvious that he knows what it means to be a minority. He is facing a lot of angry questions from a lot of (rightfully) worried citizens. What is the story in this? - plz, explain it to me like im 5, cus dont see anything wrong in he approach in getting all sides heard

It's because the black residents of South Bend are routinely treated like criminals by their cops for simply existing. I saw 9 patrol cars pull over one beat up old car with two middle aged black men inside who looked totally harmless. All the cops were white. I was just visiting for a brief period and I saw that. I can imagine how prevalent police bullying must be in that town. It's no wonder the black community there is mad at their mayor for allowing those conditions.
