  • Please welcome my good friend and Cuban brother— Dr. Luis Espina M.D. to Wednesday Checkup! You asked in my recent responding to comments video if starting medicine as a second career is a good idea and I got the best person to answer that question for you directly. Luis is a passionate fellow and loves anything he sets his mind to. He actually pursued medical school as a 2nd or even third career and in this videos he shares his highs and lows. Please enjoy this video and let me know if you’d like me to have him back for more like this!

Tune in this Sunday for a very special review of Grey’s Anatomy!!!

If you have an idea of something you want me to cover in depth, please let me know because I take your requests seriously. We will be back with more Doctor Reacts Series & Responding to Comments so please submit more names of shows/episodes & questions you'd like for me to watch. Love you all!

wrapping arms around ignorance...interestingly that's one of the nice things I got from kinesiology, while working on a paper looking at the opposing effects of myostatin and HMB on human skeletal muscle. I read over 150 papers on the topic, but I still don't know much about myostatin, other than increased levels of mstn are correlated with muscle protein degeneration, and that both mstn and hmb work through the mTOR system (but in opposite directions) to signal muscle protein metabolism...

Interestingly, medicine seems to be a practical use of the health sciences...I'm more into the mathematical/astrophysical side of it...btw I have a bachelor's in kinesiology (got it when I was 33, and now I'm 40 and trying to get back into university to study astrophysics)...

I can be wrong, but I don't think I am. Thank you both for setting an example how a doctor should be.

At 5:02 when he says "I never have to justify what I do to myself" I felt that in my soul, I've had so many jobs in my life already (I've been working since I was 14 and I'm 26 now) I now work in age care and I've never had a job I love so much, everyday that I get to see my residence just makes me feel so happy and like I'm making a difference 💜

I'm returning to finish my PhD after a 10 year hiatus and at the age of 48. I've worried many times if too late for the chance to succeed, but this video and the special graciousness of Dr. Espina gives me hope. Thank you
